Construction of Cell 7 at MBC.
Landfill cells at MBC are built to best practice environmental management (BPEM) guidelines, regulated by the Victorian EPA. To learn more about the BPEM guidelines, please visit the EPA website
Three ‘Stages’ of landfill are approved for construction and operation. Within the three stages are 12 landfill cells that are constructed and accept waste in a sequential manner.
Since 2019, MBC has been accepting waste in Stage 2, which is made up of five landfill cells. The original landfill, Stage 1, has reached its final waste elevations and is undergoing rehabilitation by phytocapping and topping the landform with native vegetation.
Stage 3, comprising 3 cells, is slated for construction after Stage 2 reaches its final waste elevation, but as uses of the site have evolved, MBC are proposing to construct and accept waste into Stage 3 before completing Stage 2.
